Vietnam’s shrimp exports in the first two months of 2018 reached US $ 440.5 million, up 16.5% over the same period in 2017.

Whiteleg shrimp still occupies a leading position in the structure of Vietnam’s export shrimp products, accounting for 69.6%, tiger shrimp accounting for 19.4% and sea shrimp 11%. China is Vietnam’s largest market for black tiger shrimp with a import value of 23.3 million US dollars from Vietnam in the first two months of this year. While the US is the largest import market of Vietnamese white shrimp with US $ 45.8 million in the first two months of this year.

For vannamei, the value of processed white shrimp and live / fresh / frozen white shrimp increased by 28% and 29%, respectively. For black tiger shrimp, the export value of processed black tiger shrimp decreased by 38% and that of raw / fresh / frozen black tiger shrimp decreased by 16%. Other dried shrimp exports increased the most by 178%. VASEP also said that the EU is still the largest import market of Vietnamese shrimp, accounting for 18.6% of Vietnam’s total shrimp exports to markets. Shrimp exports to this market in the first 2 months of this year reached US $ 81.9 million, up 11% over the same period last year. Exports to three main markets in the bloc (Netherlands, Germany and Belgium) all grew at double digits. Exports to the Netherlands and Germany increased by 62.6% and 42.5% respectively while exports to Belgium grew at a lower rate of 31.8%.

EU is considered the most active market of Vietnamese shrimp in 2017. Entering 2018, exports to this market still maintain an upward momentum. Vietnam shrimp exports to the EU market are currently quite favorable because Indian shrimp (Vietnam’s main rival in the EU) has difficulty in the EU market and faces the risk of EU ban on import, so Vietnamese shrimp are chosen instead. So. Besides, Vietnamese shrimp has the advantage of enjoying GSP from the EU that Thailand and China do not have. Export to the US showed signs of recovery after a continuous decline in 2017. Export to the US in February 2018 reached over 75 million USD, up 6.6%. Thanks to the growth, the US has risen to the second position in Vietnam shrimp imports after ranked fourth in 2017. Along with that, Japan is the third largest shrimp import market of Vietnam, accounting for 15, 5% of Vietnam’s total shrimp export turnover goes to markets.

Export value to Japan in the first 2 months of this year reached US $ 68.2 million, down 15.8% due to high inventories. Japan is considered the market with the most stable consumption among the main markets importing Vietnam shrimp. Export enterprises have improved in terms of quality and product processing specifications, so they are increasingly “attracting” the Japanese market.
