Herring (scientific name: Sardinella) is a marine fish belonging to the genus of herringbone, herring family (Clupeidae). This is a species of fish with great economic value, is an important object of the world fisheries, they are caught, exploited a lot to get herring meat. In Vietnam, there are about 10 species of herring, the most important are round herring (S. aurita) and herring (S. jussieu).

Herring is one of the group of small bony herring that survived the extinction in the late Cretaceous period, which still exists today in marine environments.
